India Rolls Out Indigenous Weather System

Union Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh today unveiled the ‘Bharat Forecast System’, one of the world’s first indigenously developed high-resolution weather forecasting models, at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune.

Developed under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Bharat Forecast System is a state-of-the-art Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) that offers weather predictions at a 12-km resolution, placing India among a select few nations with such high-end forecasting capabilities.

“This is a major milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in weather forecasting,” said Dr. Singh. “The system will greatly enhance disaster preparedness, agricultural planning, and climate resilience.”

The model incorporates advanced numerical weather prediction techniques and integrates AI/ML-based post-processing for improved accuracy. It provides 10-day forecasts with enhanced detail, significantly benefiting sectors such as agriculture, aviation, marine operations, and disaster management.

The launch marks a critical step in India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, reducing dependency on foreign models and placing Indian meteorological science on the global stage.
