Elected under Category B—which represents states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade—India’s strong vote tally reflects widespread confidence in its contributions to maritime safety, security, and environmental sustainability.
Officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that India’s re-election aligns with its strategic vision of becoming a global maritime hub. Over the years, India has taken a proactive role in digitalization of shipping processes, decarbonization initiatives, seafarer welfare reforms, and capacity-building partnerships with developing countries.
The renewed term in the IMO Council will enable India to continue advocating for balanced, inclusive, and technology-driven maritime policies while strengthening its leadership position within the global maritime community.
