The indigenous technology has been developed jointly by CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), New Delhi, and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP), Dehradun. The innovation enables the conversion of agricultural residue into bio-bitumen through pyrolysis, offering an eco-friendly alternative to conventional petroleum-based bitumen used in road construction.
Dr Singh said the technology supports India’s goals of sustainable development, waste-to-wealth, and circular economy, while also providing an effective solution for managing farm residue. The use of bio-bitumen is expected to reduce carbon emissions, lower dependence on fossil fuels, and promote greener road infrastructure.
The successful technology transfer paves the way for large-scale adoption of bio-bitumen in highway construction, strengthening India’s commitment to clean mobility and environmentally responsible growth.
