Madhya Pradesh’s GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes make global debut in UAE

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first commercial export of GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes from Madhya Pradesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking a significant milestone in promoting India’s unique agricultural products in global markets. The first commercial consignment of one metric tonne was exported on June 26, paving the way for regular overseas shipments of the premium mango variety.

Over the past several months, APEDA worked closely with the Department of Horticulture, Government of Madhya Pradesh, exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), pack house operators and international buyers to establish export linkages for the GI-tagged variety. The consignment was exported by Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd., with the mangoes sourced from Seondha Farmer Producer Company Limited and progressive farmer Sonu Gupta of Govindgarh in Rewa district. After grading, sorting and export-quality packaging at an APEDA-facilitated pack house in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, the shipment was airlifted to the UAE via Varanasi Airport.

The export has translated into higher returns for growers. While Rewa Sundarja mangoes fetch around ₹100–110 per kg in local markets, exporters procured the fruit at ₹150 per kg, providing farmers with a premium of ₹40–50 per kg. The initiative is expected to encourage more farmers to adopt export-quality production and post-harvest practices while integrating them into global value chains.

Known for its exceptional sweetness, rich aroma, fibreless pulp and distinctive flavour, the Rewa Sundarja mango holds significant export potential. APEDA said the successful export will enhance global recognition of the GI-tagged variety, strengthen India’s agricultural export ecosystem and contribute to sustainable income growth for mango growers in the Rewa region.
