Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Train Set to Begin Operations Soon

In a landmark step towards sustainable transportation, Indian Railways is all set to launch the country’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train, marking India’s entry into the elite league of nations using hydrogen fuel-cell technology for rail operations. The Railway Board has approved the introduction of the hydrogen train on the Jind–Sonipat section under Northern Railway in Haryana.

The 10-car trainset will be powered by a 1200 KW hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system and is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. Unlike conventional diesel trains, the hydrogen-powered train emits only water vapour, making it a clean and eco-friendly alternative for rail mobility.

Developed indigenously as part of India’s green mobility push, the project reflects the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy-efficient transportation. The Jind–Sonipat route has been selected as the pilot corridor, with a dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility already established at Jind. Necessary safety clearances for hydrogen storage and dispensing have also been secured from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

The hydrogen train initiative places India alongside countries such as Germany, Japan, China and the United States that are exploring hydrogen-powered rail systems for sustainable transport solutions.
